Faggot Stitch

The Faggot Stitch

Description

The Faggot stitch is an easy to master member of the Eyelet & Lace Stitch family consisting of a repeating pattern of eyelets.

While less frequently used today, in days past, a faggot was commonly used to describe a bundle of loosely tied sticks or twigs, and when used as a verb meant to tie or bind something together. The open distinctive open mesh texture of the stitch, therefore, gaining its name as it resembles a series of binds.

So, what is the Faggot Stitch? Often one of the first Eyelet & Lace stitches attempted by beginners it is relatively straightforward to master, consisting of a stitch decreasing repeat - yarnover, then purl two together; sandwiched between a knit stitch at each end of the row.

We often see this stitch used as a feature in baby blankets and clothing as a vertical panel between other lace or cable stitches, and helps to give a lighter, airier feel to any project. Choosing different thicknesses of yarn in combination with varying the tension can give amazingly different results - thinner yarn and a more relaxed tension creates a very delicate mesh texture, whereas with a tighter knitted fabric and a thicker yarn the mesh itself (rather than the eyelets) becomes more prominent and gives a stronger, more hardy appearance.
