Ridged Ribbon Stitch
The Ridged Ribbon stitch is an easy to master member of the Eyelet & Lace Stitch family consisting of a repeating pattern of raised eyelets in rows on a stockinette stitch background.
So, what is the Raised Ribbon Stitch? The stitch can be divided in half, into two distinct patterns – the first three rows are a simple stockinette stitch to give the background and the second set of three rows produce the raised row of eyelets. This raised row of eyelets is very simple to create by following a repeating two stitch increasing pattern of knitting two together followed by a yarnover.
This stitch is excellent for creating horizontal panels in knitting projects and is often combined with other Eyelet & Lace stitches or from the vast array of patterns possibly with Knit & Purl Stitches. One of the cutest usages of this stitch is to use one repeat of this at the top of baby’s booties and run a ribbon through it (quite possibly also how it came to get its name).

Difficulty Level

Cast on
Cast on an odd number of stitches.
Techniques Used in this Stitch:
- k – knit
- p – purl
- yo – yarnover
- k2tog – knit two together
Instructions
Cast on an odd number of stitches for your project. The first four rows are straightforward – knit all stitches in the first, third & fourth rows, and purl all stitches in the second row. The real definition in this pattern comes from the fifth row – continue repeating an alternating two stitch pattern of knitting two together followed by a yarnover, keep this going until you reach the last stitch and knit one. The sixth row consists entirely of knit stitches once again.
Continue repeating this six row repeat until you have reached the desired length.
Traditional Instructions
- Row 1, 3 & 4: k all stitches.
- Row 2: p all stitches.
- Row 5: *k2tog, yo; repeat from * to the last stitch, k1.
- Row 6: k all stitches.
Repeat row 1 to desired length.
